Fjord Pferden

There's threat of a rupture in the NFHR, the Fjord Horse registry in the USA. There's discussion on one of the groups about the current rule that ejects horses and people from the registry for cross-breeding.

I got sucked into an argument.

They have to otherwise those stock breeds would be trashed from the halter weirdos that want beefy uppers and toothpick legs.

Naw, the using cow horse lines would preserve something, but they'd probably break off the main registry (and there is a Foundation QH association or registry that has a closed studbook to my understanding).

The QH halter breds do baffle me greatly though.

That is fair. Mine had racing lines which I always forget quarter horses race. You know, the thing they got the name for.

I laugh not just bc of how silly the argument being made is, but also bc this came up in my feed today:

Aw, it won't let me read the whole thing.

It is a pretty ridiculous argument.

All you really need to see is the headline, lol.

The internet is a hellscape when it comes to talking about ANYTHING you actually care about.

I'm interested to learn that horses/owners can be removed from the books for **ever** crossbreeding a purebred. I mean, it makes sense to only register the pureblood offspring, but... I never considered a horse/owner could be punished so for "allowing" a crossbreed to even occur....

I don't think they do it often, but the impetus of this argument was importing stallions from Europe who had been used to crossbreed and the hoops and promises the new US owners had to go through to be able to register them (or be denied) in the US. Apparently the NFHR is the ONLY Fjord registry in the world with a crossbreed rule.

From what I've read it was initially established to keep people from sneaking crosses into the registry because the gene pool was so small when the registry was formed. Now we have DNA verification of parentage and it's a pretty moot point

You're welcome!

If I remember right the Friesian studbook will also pull credentials on approved stallions that are crossbred, but don't seem to care so much about ones that don't make their highest rating.
