I lurk in these groups and rarely comment. I like the spirit behind but in practice I find most people there a little too idealistic. We don't live in a world where a horse will never have to feel ANY pressure EVER. I think teaching them to be able to react appropriately is not only necessary, but kind. Because in an emergency trying to lure a terrified horse with a cookie on to a trailer to avoid a forest fire is just going to get everyone killed.
Some of them definitely are quite out there. The idea that the horse shouldn't ever feel stressed when the human is present is a bit ridiculous. How do you teach them to look to you for answers if you can never experience something unexpected or stressful?
Eating comes secondary if a horse is stressed, part of the reason I find treats unhelpful in most instances (I have been using them with the donkeys though, more self-assured and harder to motivate!).
