I had a client's horse go just about vertical on me Tuesday. There was a brief moment where I worried about her heading all the way over. Just before we left she was getting a little grumpy about the trot. Friday the mare popped her front end slightly on her rider and I got on and she was all bunched up and angry. Rearing is the worst. I' rather have a horse go into bronco mode bucking (i'll fall off either way but the horse doesnt usually land on you when they're bucking). My pony nearly flipped on me one day when I was in high school. It scared him so much he never reared again!

Rearing is probably one of the most dangerous things a horse can do under saddle because of the risk of it going over backwards. Up, down, and sideways isn't much fun either, but it's much easier to safely push off in that case whereas a rearing horse who loses its footing you don't have many places to go as it hits that point.
