Not sure I'll get a response here but here goes.

You have a 16 year old girl new to Lansing and schools of choice outside of Lansing isn't an option.

Sexton High School or Everett High School?

Back in the day, it was Everett. At least, IMO. It was my school after all. I have no idea these days though.

Haha, the choice is never Everett.

Though in all seriousness, Sexton has had to up their security in the past years because of increased discipline problems. Also, the district is considering closing Sexton because of funding issues. Sexton has the lowest enrollment of the three high schools. It may be in your best interest to enroll at Everett to avoid having to transfer.

You sound like a Sexton grad, lol.

It just seems to me that all of the danged Lansing schools have gone nuts in the discipline area since I've graduated. I've got these crazy images of the school from Dangerous Minds and Stand and Deliver.

Word on the street is that Eastern is the school that's going to end up closing. I don't have anything firm to back me up. Just hearsay.

I AM a Sexton grad. :P

Agreed with the first part. I can only speak from my experience with going back to visit Sexton after graduating, but it seems like the entire district is going to hell in a hand-basket.

It has come down to Eastern or Sexton. Sexton definitely has the better facilities to remain open (a brand new football stadium, or any football stadium, as Eastern doesn't have one anymore. There's been quite a bit of remodeling, etc.) but a hot shot on the school board is an Eastern grad and he's heavily campaigning to keep Eastern open-- he's got the money to back this proposal, too. This is what I've been hearing from some Sexton grads who are on the board.

The district could benefit with a sale of land to Sparrow too if they shut down Quakerville. The football uniforms are an abomination as well and for those alone the school should be closed.

I hate that she's going to have to go to one of these schools. Look, I'm the biggest Lansing supporter here but the city schools have turned into a goddamned zoo. At least from my outside perspective. I hope I'm wrong.

Sam,

As a juvenile court officer I visited just about every school in Lansing. And the key I think is to get her into every single honors class she can get in. I think the teachers are probably fine everywhere, but there are some serious discipline problems in the gen pop due to kids with parents who suck.

I had the most clients in Everett, so I guess I have the best impression of that school, as I worked with a lot of the staff and had a positive experience.

I had no idea you did that line of work. WHO ARE YOU??

hah.

Seriously though, great information. I'm...skeptical about the honors thing. I'm not saying she's not smart but I've not seen the kind of drive from her that it would require.

She's a different girl than she was last school year so who knows. I'll talk to her mom and see what we can do about this. It's a great recommendation.

"general population". Sounds like prison. heh

I did some student-teaching at Sexton and never had any problems. I'd recommend it.

I've heard that about the overcrowding over and over. Thanks.
