It looks like my fiancee and I are moving to Lansing in January. I work in IT as an enterprise architect and my new client is the State of Michigan. I estimate I'll live in Lansing for a minimum of two years

1. Good movie theater selection as the other person said, but no Indie theater anymore. There used to be one, but it closed a few years ago. No beer/food at any theaters except typical movie theater food. The closest place to get that is an hour away in Novi at a chain theater; they serve beer

Detroit is legendary for R&B, soul, blues, and jazz (and techno, of course). Has it lost its connection with its musical heritage, enough that you would call it "shit?"
1. This was answered very well already by the other two. If you're looking for that old fashioned one screen theater, a short drive to Grand Ledge will bring you to the Sun Theater. Otherwise, Lansing is pimp in the movie theater category (outside of the food thing)
2. Not my specialty sadly.
3. Downtown Lansing, there is a newly opened bookstore. It's on Washington and Washtenaw I think. The name escapes me though. For odd/rare books, there's the Curious Bookstore in East Lansing. As mentioned there's also the big chains Barnes & Noble and Shuler's Books. If you're into the comic books there is a shop downtown Lansing on Washington called Clem's. There are other comic places but this is the only one that I've been in.
4. Celebration Cinema offers late night movies, Meijer stores are all 24 hours, Denny's is 24 hours. What the other two said was fairly accurate with the bowling and Beaners (I refuse to call it Biggby).
5. Lots of clubs have specific theme nights. Normally I hate the Lansing City NOISE because it's a corporate

Lansing is as cool or as boring as you are. The options are there, you just have to make the effort to find them. You will hear people complain that there is nothing to do here. That's just not true. People that say that usually never try to expand out of their comfort zone.
you will totally miss the chick-fil-a. i certainly do when i am in lansing. in case you were wondering the nearest one is in toledo ohio (about 2 hours from lansing) and i have been tempted to drive there on occasion.
They claim to have invented the chicken sandwich. Their chicken is all white meat, fried in peanut oil for that extra yummy fried taste. It started in the south, so to southerners like myself, it's the shangri-la of fast food.
All hyperbole aside, it's an inexpensive fast food place with good food (the waffle fries are to die for) and a unique taste. Their sandwiches don't taste like anyone else's. They're closed on Sundays, mainly because the guy who founded it is a Christian.
Oh boy, you are missing out. Basically the best chicken nuggets in the world. They're so good because the fry them in peanut oil. So yummy. I'm having it this afternoon, maybe.

There's nothing like sharing a bucket of Shiner Bock with your friends while watching the latest Hollywood blockbuster.
