Ah, okay. Now I understand what you are basing your comments on. From your post, I was a bit confused since you were referencing fines, but I didn't get that from the Swirtwaist factory link

I'm in a love/hate relationship with Unions. I understand the need that existed that gave birth to the formation of unions. It was a true need. It was something that needed to be done to fix the greed of a time period that painted all businesses with the same brush of corruption, whether they treated their workers the same or not

I don't know if you read teen-oriented fiction, but I read an engaging fictionalized account of that fire called Ashes of Roses a few years ago and thought it might be of interest.

1) What fines?
2) I'm assuming that this post is because of news item that you saw or something you've read. Is there a link to this video or article?

Fines are typically all that happens to companies that run sweatshops, if they stick around long enough to be fined.
Studies by the Labor Department in the mid-1990s found that 67 percent of garment factories in Los Angeles and 63 percent of those in New York violate minimum wage and overtime laws. Even worse, the study found that 98 percent of Los Angeles’ garment factories have workplace health and safety problems that could cause injuries or death.
If you'd like to learn more, just Google "sweatshop deaths." Unfortunately, there are a lot of hits.
