It makes no sense to trade with the likes of Saudi Arabia and China and with the same moral impunity deny Cuba even the most modest of trade statuses. Of course, the leaders SA and China never pointed nuclear missiles at the US.
The US wants Cuba to fail so badly that it sees any form of trade as a certain prolonging of Castro's regime (bizzarely enough, the same Cubans so strongly against trade liberalization are responsible for about $600,000,000 worth of remittences to the island's economy each year). However, I think Castro's success has been--in a large part--due to blaming every economic downturn on the US trade embargo. If we lifted that embargo I think you would undoubtedly see Cuba agressively pushing an anti-trade agenda with Castro refusing to allow Cubans access to American markets.
