[Night Shift] Day 16, Cafeteria

[Continued from here]

Dias didn't exactly need to be told that Scar wasn't entirely happy with the group arrangements, even though the mercenary had tried to choose the groups as effectively as possible. Of course, judging from the glower Scar had given to Lust and Cliff, the effectiveness of the groups wasn't what was bothering him ( Read more... )

River was feeling decidedly better about everything after they's left the hallway, crowded with minds and thoughts and emotions. And the brain-meddler was gone, though she thought perhaps it should be unfair to label. An apology might be in order.

Scar was obviously angry that Lust and Cliff would be left alone together. Probably because of the wandering eyes and Scar's unvoiced want of the other woman. Or homunculus. Or whatever she technically was to be called. Regardless, Dias had made a fairly logical decision in splitting the groups. Sometimes she wondered if Scar just wasn't a logical person.

River blinked at Dias when he asked whether she was alright. She simply smiled brightly at him and nodded, as though nothing had happened a moment ago. A frown was quick to follow.

"I'm fine, but I think Scar's worried about his lover," she said with a tiny, amused smirk.

The beam of Scar's flashlight traveled across the wall and past tables to a long, metal counter at the end of the room. He could easily tell that this was the cafeteria, though slight changes in the type of tables and the way in which new chairs were arranged around them were unsettling to say the least.

The Ishbalan was about to assess whether this new find was a sign for better or for worse when he heard River's words.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

The scarred man slowly turned around, eyes wide and indecipherable as something on his face seemed to twitch while his mouth seemed to fall lopsidedly upon his countenance.

Then, in one fell swoop, it all seemed to snap together into an intense and sudden scowl and the rest of the Ishbalan's body whirled around to face the offending young girl.

"THAT WOMAN." He grated as he threw up a hand trembling in anger and pointed at the door they had entered from. "IS NOT. MY LOVER."

River just laughed, right in Scar's face. It wasn't meant to be a condescending, instigating laugh. It more pure amusement as she stood there, completely unaffected by the man's outburst.

When he was finished, the girl simply danced over to him and stood on her tiptoes to throw her arms around his neck in a hug. He looked like he needed one.

"It's okay. Don't need to bury it. I can see," River comforted him solemnly.

Dias cleared his throat. He was actually rather lucky, he decided, that years of brooding and the more recent angst of River's mentioning Cecille's name enabled him to maintain a poker face, because otherwise he might have snickered and then Scar would probably have exploded from the internal pressure of his indignation. "Leave it alone, River," he settled for saying. "Whether you can see it or not, I don't think it's any of our business."

Dias didn't need to be telepathic himself to know that Scar would agree emphatically with that statement.
