A friend and I got into a conversation a few day ago about dating1 vs. courting2.  I have realized that  even though I have never actually thought about it before I want to be courted by someone.  I have often said and always felt that I could never date someone that I could not see myself marrying.  This is why dating someone who is not christian ( Read more... )

It seems to me that the difference is that when dating one is looking for a person to court. Its kind of like the pregame before the party, to use a slightly off-color metaphor. After all, would you want to court, or be courted by, someone whom you really wouldn't want to marry?

Courting is more like the first steps of a dance with an ending. Dating is sorting through the crowd for a partner one would feel comfortable dancing with.

Unfortunatly for me, however, it seems that in current society the emphasis is on dating rather than on courting. I say unfortunate for me because I've really no idea how to go about "dating" while I'm enough of a hopeless romantic to think that I would be a spectacular courter. Which you just might find out in say... 16 years.

Anway, that's how I would read it this late night in England.

exactly!! You totally hit the nail on the head. That's how I feel all the time.

oh 16 years....that might be too long to wait.
