I want to rewrite Rumpelstiltskin with a defiant heroine who abandons the straw-to-gold deal after the first night and instead convinces Mr. R. to help bust her out on the second. And maybe then she loves him a little.
You should really, really read "The Rumpelstiltskin Problem," in which the author lists the obvious shortcomings of the tale and rewrites the story 6 different ways to overcome them.
And also "Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter," in which the Miller's Daughter wises up in a completely different way and DOES wind up running off with Rumpelstiltskin. That story is the "aftermath".
