Many Italians speak English, particularly younger folks and those who live in the big cities. And in fact, a lot of them speak other European languages too--like French, since Switzerland is so close, or Spanish, since their languages are so similar. I don't think it's a stretch at all to have an airport/customs employee who speaks a few languages.

thank you so much for the birthday wishes!

the Italian postal service motto is pretty much "whenever we get around to it." a friend sent a postcard from there once and it took over a month before I received it, whereas other things I've received from all over Europe only took a week. and now i'm thinking perhaps i was lucky to have received it at all.

i would read your story, put some duct tape over the mouth of inner critic Cowell.
