Question: How can I request a special lighting of the ESB?

I don't know if they paid, but any organization can ask to have the lighting changed for an event, and I would think that includes a graduation, which is not "corporate, promotional or personal," for the most part (even though they are a private university).

I'm surprised the Empire State Building even bothered to put that question in the FAQ...surely, it's been blatantly violated before?

They did make an exception for Snapple once, but apparently it aroused enough of an outcry that it warranted not one, but two FAQ questions:

Please explain the suspension of the annual lighting schedule and why you are doing lights for Snapple Beverages.

After 9/11, the NY Convention & Visitors Bureau was working with companies in an effort to bring business back to NYC and let everyone know NYC was safe and a good place to do business. As an incentive, they offered a total NY experience to a company who brought the most business back to NYC -- a walk on in a Broadway play, chance to meet a NY sports figure, lights on the Empire State Building, etc. The company who met this criteria was Snapple, so that is why we are doing their yellow corporate color on August 13th. We pretty much have a prohibition against corporate, promotional, personal lightings, but this is different and was a good program post 9/11.

Why was the building all yellow on August 13th?

After the horrific events of September 11th, New York's Conventions ( ... )
