It comes from the Old English genitive form which ended in -es, but in modern usage, what's the point of the possessive apostrophe, anyway? I guess it's to prevent mispronunciation in text when 1) an added 's' would close a syllable, changing vowel length, or 2) the word ends in 's' already, creating confusion
