hackthis' recent post mentioning Paul Newman and the sad news about Heath Ledger got me thinking about celebrating the actors of a bygone era. It's kind of a random collection - there are lots of actors I'd like to have included, but I could only spend so long trolling the Internet for pix. Most are from
this awesome site. Please feel free to join in with your own pictures of beautiful men from Hollywood's golden age.
First, there's Paul, who was shamelessly exploited for his physical assets.
And I feel terrible about objectifying him when I say: GUH.
Paul, however, was not the only actor to suffer the beefcake shot for the sake of his career:
Yep, that's Fred MacMurray, the original nutty professor. Who knew?
There's lots of Errol Flynn beefcake, but I love this out-of-focus one.
And then there's Robert Mitchum. The Fifties was prime time for beefcake.
Tyrone Power in a funky tropical wrap. I'll take that to go, please.
Unfortunately, I could not get my hands on an amazing beefcake shot of Alan Ladd I once saw in a book which is pure, pure gay porn. But this shot from Two Years Before the Mast is a good substitute.
Joel McCrea was very pretty.
And he liked it when girls tied him up.
Okay, this is about when I started to feel guilty for objectifying all these male bodies, so I switched to guys with clothes.
Okay, no, actually, I ran out of naked men. Sorry. But have some Laurence Olivier - he's hot even fully dressed.
Here's one you probably haven't heard of:
Anton Walbrook. He was in several movies I love, including the wonderfully homoerotic The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp with another hottie, Roger Livesey. Here he is in The Forty-Ninth Parallel, a marvelously cheesy war movie in which he stands out as the leader of a Hutterite community on the Canadian Prairies.
I absolutely adore this picture of Bob Hope.
And here he is with his boyfriend.
Speaking of boyfriends, have some Jimmy Cagney and George Raft:
How much do I love that one of the most gorgeous men ever to grace the silver screen...
...made the homeliest woman ever?
Okay, I'll admit it. I have a thing for Lloyd Nolan, especially in Guadalcanal Diary. It helps that this is J's favourite slashy movie.
This is Ronald Colman, who was very pretty even without the trademark moustache. He also always looks about 10 years younger than he actually is (he'd be 45 in this pic).
I love this Gene Kelly pic, though any shots you can find of him in tight pants would also be appreciated.
LOOK AT THE EYELASHES ON BASIL RATHBONE OMFG.
Okay, I never got the Keanu Reeves - Gregory Peck connection until now. Wow.
Spence and his wonderful, freckly Irish face.
And finally, Jimmy Stewart playing a truck driver. The hat is apparently a working class accoutrement. :)
Let's hope that in sixty years, somebody posts some pretty pictures of Heath.
