so for my homework for genre fiction, we all got assigned mysteries and we have to solve them. mine is thus >

a guy disappears. his footprints lead to a hole (smaller than he) in a shallow, frozen lake. where did he go?

He fell in the hole, but since then it's been cold enough for the lake to continue freezing. As the lake continued to freeze, the hole slowly froze from the outside in (the way an ice cube melts from the outside in or a cut heals from the outside in), making the hole smaller over time. Thus, the man originally fit in the hole because it was bigger, but it appears that he wouldn't have fit because the hole has become smaller.

um. the hole was bigger, then he went in and then lay on the bottoma dn a bit of the whole froze around him. or. um. he was abducted by aliens. those are best guesses. but i am a dumbass.
