Got my exam results today - going through into year 3 with a decent 2.1 go me!
(Am quite gutted that i didn't quite get a first in Between the Wars, although I didn't actually finish the exam} But still... am pleased.

Please explain to a yank what your grading system is? A 2.1 GPA (grade point average) would be pretty abysmal here, so I'm assuming that's not what you mean. 2.1 of what? And I've heard of "taking a first," but I'm not sure what that means exactly. Does that mean you got the highest grade in your class?

However it works, though, it's pretty clear you're happy about it so congrats. :D

The grading system at a British University is as follows:

1st. It is easier to get a first in some subjects than others. For instance, if you're doing something like Mathematics then obviously its more clear cut as there is either a right answer or a wrong answer, whereas with English it is so damn difficult to get firsts all the time. At Manchester Uni English department you need a 70 to get a first, a 77 in English is considered bloody fantastic, whereas in Maths, not so much perhaps. Whereas 96 in Maths is heard of, a 96 in English Lit is unfathomable ( ... )
