why why why

Why am I so hung up on being "historically accurate".

I should have had Nick's pants done and dusted by now but I am deliberating yet again on having them perfect.

It is not that I don't have a pattern - I am using the pattern from Patterns for theatrical costumes (which I have cut out as you can see) as a base and then adapting with the gaitered ( Read more... )

Hardest part to get right is the closure at the ankles, save it for last. Do most, if not all, of the fitting on the inseam which keeps the outseam straight. It is my understanding that common soldiers did not have pockets in their breeches or overalls. While pockets certainly can be useful, the tight fit of the overalls can make keeping anything in them uncomfortable. Plus not doing pockets will make your life so much easier. If you have any question send me a message.

Thanks for the advice. Nice to hear from someone in the know. I will keep in mind about the inseam and yes I won't be doing pockets (as Nick will be more lower class I am thinking that their trousers are more simple).

I certainly have some questions so a big thank you in advance.

Take it step by step. Cut them long and fit the waistband first. The hard part for me is getting the seams centered on the leg (my knees point out.) If you do the inseam last you can adjust both ways at once. Gaiters are supposed to be tight and they are much harder to fit. Let me know if you want help via email...
