what are hash marks?

Two sets of lines that mark off a center area of the field. They look like, well, hash marks. Encarata tells me that "After each play, the officials place the ball either between the hash marks or on the hash mark closest to the end of the previous play. The next play begins from that spot."

Just don't use it too much, like I do. I guess new people think I'm smart and cool when I toss off this fact, but Ethan is pretty sick of the little anecdote.
