I heard an uplifting tangent related to Jerry Falwell's death on NPR last night. It mentioned that many young evangelicals look up to Bono more than Falwell, and want to focus their political and social action on issues like disease, poverty, and the environment rather than sex-based "morality." That is wonderful in a bunch of ways. So many Christians have given Christianity a bad name in recent years (and not so recent, but I leave that commentary to Eddie Izzard), it's heartening to hear that some are returning to some kind of balance - despite the fact that I still disagree 100% with their positions on sexual matters.

Damn, that's brilliant. Especially considering it's coming from a man that has strong conservative opinions on abortion. He actually has the balls to point out that abortion is not the be all end all problem and that we've got issues out here in the world that are far more pressing.

I really hope this guy or someone like him eventually heads the Christian Coalition. I'm not Christian and I disagree with a lot of the things he believes in (theologically *and* sociopolitically), but he sounds like the kind of guy who can strike up a peaceful, intelligent dialog with just about anyone. And, in my opinion, that should be an absolute requirement for anyone in a leadership position of any religious group. No pun intended, but it's fundamental to progress in terms of faith and society. And yet all too often, divisive assholes end up in those positions instead.
