I have only known one Carlotta. She was my friend in Carousel pre-school in Virginia. She had wavy/curly long hair. We were three or four when we were friends, and then we lost touch.
I found her again when my mom got a permanent substitute teaching job in an impoverished county in Virginia. We were seven or eight by that point, and I saw her in a school play at my mom's new school.
Fortunitly my family - being from Panama & Costa Rica - had already given me a Spanish-y name. It took a bit of convincing to get my middle school Spanish teacher to let me keep it - since it's not a typical name like Maria or something. But she did insist on spelling it with one N. I let her have that one - though I would have liked a tilde over the N since it sounds like "ny." But no dice on that one either.
I was able to keep my real name. Once I found out it would be pronounced meshell I told the teacher there was no fucking way. I wish we could have chosen our own names, though. That would rule. I would have picked Cyborg Bob or something.
