I had a picture that I'm afraid to put online, even though I picked it up from the dredges of the Intardweb, where a girl of about twelve or so, probably taken from a department store catalog, is standing with a thought balloon that reads: "As soon as he stops putting out, I'm calling the cops." Across the bottom it's macroed "OWN3D!! (By a little girl, no less!)" See, like George Carlin once said about rape, pedophilia can be funny.

Oh, I actually have found one really, really, really terrible pedophilia comment funny. It's so horrible I can't write it here. But Max and Jon know what it is.

For the record, Dr. Phil is a fucking moron. Behind the scenes he's extremely rude, extremely sexist, doesn't know more about physical medicine than the average middle-of-the-road internist, and knows next to nothing about psychiatric medicine. (I've met the guy before and I studied communications in college with people who have sinced worked in TV productions featuring him, so I'm not just spouting baseless opinions here.)

The point being, the fact that you met any of his 'criteria' is an indicator of nothing. (Not that you really gave a crap either way, but just fyi.) Not to mention the fact that the vast majority of Americans don't even know what the word pedophilia really means. In fact, I strongly suspect that Dr. Phil is one of them.

(And in case I'm giving off creepy vibes here, don't get me wrong, my knowledge on this topic is purely academic and related to my studies of mental illness.)

Fascinating. I actually love Dr. Phil, and I've heard that he has his flaws. You and I need to discuss this. I don't feel like writing my defense of Dr Phil right now, though. I don't feel like debating, in fact. I'd rather discuss.

Okay, I'm not trying to force a discussion or debate or whatever in this particular thread, but there are some things I need to make clear up front.

As far as personality goes, I'm talking about Dr. Phil off camera. On camera he's quite well-spoken and warm, but off camera he's very condescending and it quickly becomes clear that he's a doctor because it makes him think he's smarter than everyone else and he likes having control over other people lives. Which, clearly, are all the wrong reasons to have a career *anywhere* in the medical profession.

Though sometimes on camera (or in front of an audience anyway) he lets things slip. For starters have a look at this forum thread about how he went off about TV "Nannies" last summer. Then scroll down to the update post "SUPERNANNY CORNERS DR. PHIL on Talkshow" to see what happened when "Supernanny" Jo Frost called into a radio interview with Dr. Phil and the two got into it and he let his true colors shine ( ... )

The need to dominate other people's lives is indicative of a mental problem in and of itself...

Since with #4, I like both Blake AND his grandma, I think it is (b) crazy old lady.

Depends on how many cats you have.

Yes! I want cats. Between five and twelve would be good. But E has to be "allergic."

Pfft. Four people live in my house. Two are allergic to cats. Maybe three. Does that stop us from having them? We just take a whole lot of Singulair, Sudafed, and all that other stuff.

Dr. Phil preys upon peoples' paranoia and fear. I can't believe we live in a culture where we need to discourage people from any kind of kind, personal interaction, and everything becomes more and more taboo.

People prey on other people's paranoia and fear because they are trying to assert their own personal agendas by distracting people from thinking logically. Anytime an emotional response is involved, the rational argument flies out the window. Politicians use this to manipulate society to their own will. Dr. Phil is likely just doing it to make money off of poor, unsuspecting, and trusting fans.

I think that's apparant with the rapidity in which he manages to publish books on varying topics that he can't possibly be that educated in or experienced with.

He's probably a bit like Ann Coulter in that, no matter how educated he may be, he ruins it by making controversial statements that shock people into talking about him. Just like Ann Coulter, some people may like him because they like a person with strong convictions that are wrapped up into easily-parroted catchphrases, yet some people see through his little ruse. Unlike Ann Coulter, however, I'm not going to say that he's uneducated or unqualified; he's just giving it all up for the success of a marketing image.
