I hear your pain. I wrote Unseen, a Snily, and posted it all over, including on Occlumency. I have had to accept that it never, ever will have the reads and reviews of even the least of my SSHG fics. I can live with that, I guess. If you really crave reviews, SSHG is the place to be, and Ash has more reads than anywhere for me.
For example, the last chapter of The Love You Take, my current SSHG WIP:
2064 reads on Ashwinder 1562 reads on TPP
Unseen, first chapter has:
581 reads at Occlumency 340 reads at TPP
It's just a much larger group of fans, my dear. We were a force to be reckoned with at Snapefest and Portus!
*sighs and hugs Auntie Subvers* I know SS/HG fans out number all SS/OFC fans combined. Really I do. It's not so much the reviews--although feedback does make it easier to decide if others are enjoying your work or not--it's the putting so much of your time and effort into something and not getting much back. *lacks intrinsic motivation* Truthfully I never could see the appeal of SS/HG, but I can see why some of those God-awful Mary Sue fics that ruin OFC for most of us could keep people away
( ... )
And that's what I really don't get. How a poster can pair the two up, one or both of the characters don't even remotely resemble their canon counter-parts and people will squee themselves into a coma. BUT you take the same story change Hermione to something else and the crickets chirp. It's alway made me wonder what would happen if I took an intimate scene from SoMH changed Callista to Hermione and posted it on Ashwinder.
If you actually like SS/HG, write it, but else I wouldn't do so. Let's face it, the fact that some SS/HG fics get hundreds and thousands of reviews doesn't necessarily mean that they are better written than any other fics. It's a matter of what you enjoy to read and write, but I wouldn't write to cater to a certain audience. I prefer to write what I like, and if no one reads it, so be it.
It's the nature of the beast. Most of my stuff is non-hg/ss stuff, yet it only receives a fraction of the attention the hg/ss stuff does. The hg/ss ship is huge, so on Sycophant Hex most readers flock to Ashwinder, bypassing the ugly front page (which will be upgraded and swanky soon), which leads to the other pages. Even on Owl and the Petulant Poetess my hg/ss stuff is far more read than the non hg/ss stuff. Only on (yes, I am saying this) fanfiction . net does my non Snape and Hermione stuff get a nice broad range of readers.
Well, poo. I didn't answer any of the responses because I'm not sure. I do think that there's a HUGE fan base for SS/HG and that people love one-shots and crack-fics especially. Keep it Simple, you know?
I would say that your OFC work is closer to doing original fiction, which is an overarching goal, right, so stick with that. Do the other on the side when you need to feed the ego.
The main reason I decided to do SS/OFC and now RL/OFC is because I want to eventually move into original fiction. Developing a new character to weave into canon was part of the challenge.
I can never decide whether to read SS/HG stories. I am a little creeped out when it is a story where she is a student of his; it just seems so very wrong a thing to me. It just 'seems' to me that he would never even half consider a student as a bed partner. This is all very complicated in my mind. I've read some SS/HG stories to be honest, but they tend to be more the mentoring sort, not sexual. I can't quite explain it. Sorry. The whole matter of reviews and hits has long confused me. While I love getting a ' that was well done,' it doesn't sting like the rants. I, a small time writer, and therefore haven't had the amount of reviews you have. Your work is so good, don't give up.
I've read a few SS/HG fic on recommendation and they fallen into basic categories: Who the heck are these characters? Yuck! Dear God! My mind is scarred for life! I think I may have read one where it was a mature Hermione meeting up with Severus many years after she had left school that wasn't making me cringe. But then again, Hermione in her late 30's/early 40's is way different than the swotty school girl. So other than having the names it could have easily worked with original characters sans magic.
I think her re-meeting Snape as an adult is another animal all together. I can accept that notion; though the use of 'I had a crush on you back then' is a bit old. True other names could work more easily. He really just didn't seem like a person who'd be interested in a former student, what with all of his emotional baggage about Lily Evans. It seems any relationship he'd have would be a very long while in the coming, and him with a great deal of guilt for allowing himself to abandon Lily.

Especially since there is no indication in canon. I'm a bit of a canon stickler in that if a fic has a basis in canon events, I can read it even if it's AU. A partnership between the two would be OK if it's a gradual gaining of mutual trust. The ones that just throw the two in the sack with no real explanation are the ones I avoid. *sighs*
The only time I could see him having a fling with a student *might be* when he was a very young teacher.
