You should read Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. It's a romance novel but it's more like fiction and beautifully written. She's a local author too! :D

Over here, we have Katie Fforde who's definitely up on the 'romantic' scales without crossing over into other genres and without being Harlequiny. I only read one of hers entitled Artistic Licence and it was thoughful but not very literary, although the writer obviously could write more challenging stuff. It does lean a bit towards chicklit, though.
Nick Hornby is classified as a 'romantic' novelist but doesn't fall into the chicklit pit, probably because his main characters tend to be male.
