You should read Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. It's a romance novel but it's more like fiction and beautifully written. She's a local author too! :D
Over here, we have Katie Fforde who's definitely up on the 'romantic' scales without crossing over into other genres and without being Harlequiny. I only read one of hers entitled Artistic Licence and it was thoughful but not very literary, although the writer obviously could write more challenging stuff. It does lean a bit towards chicklit, though. Nick Hornby is classified as a 'romantic' novelist but doesn't fall into the chicklit pit, probably because his main characters tend to be male.
I'd be happy to look at the story as it is if it can help.
