As one who was mis-medicated as a child and watch my friends younger siblings be over medicated, I support your decision to be incredibly cautious or even avoid it all together ( ... )

amphetimines, that they give kids with ADHD, they can cause the kids to spin further into highs and lows. Ugh, right?!? And the first doctor we went to see would have had him on stimulants by the second session.

What did your brother's world look like when he was little?

And if you're going to be born with a mood disorder, you could do worse than to be born to a parent who has it, understands it, and thrives in spite of it. Right?

This is, a thousand times, important and true. If my own mother had recognized her own depression, and dealt with it, I wouldn't have been left on my own to figure it out, fix myself - and then retroactively come to terms with how she was as much a patient as I was; rather than just a bad mom.

If your son has a mood disorder, and you have personal experience to share; his own experience will be one of compassion, patience and insight with that disorder. This will be of great service to him, as he grows into the tools that you teach him to cope. A deaf child with a deaf mother will learn sign language and how to operate in the world faster than a child with parents that hear.

This is important for you to remember - you pass on your good stuff, too!
