Totally agree. I think the problem is that most editors think about books more or less as possible movies, whether it's conscious or not. Our culture is so full of clashes and bangs that a reflective or self-reflective is deemed 'boring'. I don't know if you've ever heard of the French novel The Silence of the Sea (Le Bruit de la mer) by Vercors. It dates back to WWII so, in terms of writing, it's pretty old fashioned. Pretty much nothing happens in it but that is what the book is about: what happens when you can't do anything. I've been meaning to read it again. I've got a copy in France. I'll let you know how it reads as an adult, if you're interested.
