It wasn't turkeys that landed on Plymouth Rock

I need more Thanksgiving decorations. All I have is a ceramic table turkey with a glued-on head, a bunch of little pumpkins and a beautiful sign that says "Give Thanks" that I picked up at the farmer's market last year. I need more, but I'm looking for something very specific ( Read more... )

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for Pilgrims and Indians decorations for you. :) I have seen a lot of books telling the 'good myth' would you be interested in that as well or just decorations?

Nah, I just want happy little people. Stuff to hang up or put on end-tables.

There are SOME pilgrims out there - but I want pilgrims interacting with indians. Call me old-fashioned - LOL.

Thanks, chica! ;)

I'm not going to touch a discussion about the true history of native/european relations in this country because you'd likely out-source or out-passion me, and I'm not disputing it anyway. but there are a lot of myths we teach our children. Many of them fall apart or get ugly if you look too deeply, but on surface level they illustrate basic ideas we'd like them to embrace - like the idea that peoples of different backgrounds can come together in charity and friendship, that we should be thankful for what blessings we have - those that are given by human hands and those given by our mother earth. There is plenty of time to delve into truth and history as a child matures - when they are small they need to internalize idyllic ideas so that they can come to harsher realities with the proper attitude.

OK.

All I'll say is that growing up in a Native family, that myth just felt like a lie.

Having slept on it, I see your point more and more. But, for my own little family, I can't let go of the message that *I* took away from it, as a little girl. I want my boy to have an open heart.
