without using the word lonely, or any variation thereof (i.e. all alone, there was no one else, etc). It can be a word, an image, a passage, whatever strikes you.

In a crowded bookstore, a woman has just finished a cup of hot chocolate. She weaves her way through the throng of bodies to discard her paper cup and return to her table. There is a glob of whipped cream resting unnoticed by her on the right corner of her mouth. No one tells her.

I'm standing outside my school, waiting to get picked up. It's late, every one else has left. Only the security guards are still inside the building. They keep checking up on me to make sure that I'm not outside when it's time for them to lock the doors. I keep watching the cars, hoping that one of them will be a family member or a friend. But 8 o'clock rolls by...9 o'clock...10 o'clock...and no one comes for me. I call my mom, crying histerical,

I ask her 'Why haven't you come?'

She apologizes and says, 'I thought your father was going to pick you up.'

But he's too busy being someone else to bother. He's too busy to be the father I so desperately need.

Mom comes, but it's already far too late...my heart is already broken.

The curtains are drawn. It is sunny outside but this room is airtight and dark. I am sitting on the grey sofa, staring at the empty screen of the TV. The old clock we haven't put back on the wall yet is ticking. I think it wants out.
