Okay. The insurance company finally came through and agreed to cover the surgery, the surgeon's office called to confirm the time and the procedure, and everything seems to be ready to go. Tomorrow at 9:45am I report to the hospital, to have the vertebrae in my neck fused in two places

"Yay!" seems like the wrong response to hearing that someone's booked for major surgery, but given how badly you need it and how hard it's been to get to this point, it might just be appropriate after all.

I'll be thinking of you while I'm sweating out my Early Modern Europe class's discussion of the 16th-century Italian benandanti myth. Actually, I would be anyway, because frankly a secret society of people who go out in the night via astral projection, armed with fennel stalks, to do battle with evil witches (armed with sorghum, whatever that is) on behalf of the coming year's crops seems like it'd be right up your street somehow. :)
