Most people who own animals... shouldn't. I have really gotten frustrated with the sheer number of people who don't know jack or shit about owning a dog or a cat, let alone any sort of exotic animal. Oh sure! Feed the chinchilla rabbit food! That's a GREAT idea! You can keep your ferret in a box that's 2 foot by 3 foot and never let him out. That's

Even since I was like 4 years old, I always looked at buying a pet as buying a friend. Someone to add to the family, and bring an extra little love to your home. And LIKE a friend or family member, you take care of them, and make sure they get the same wholesome treatment that you would get.
It saddens me every single time I see animals neglected like this. They come to people with open arms, ready to surrender to our homes in hopes that they'll live loving and happy lives.
Fuck... even GOLDFISH require steady maintenance and daily care.

Goldfish need more than a bowl with flat water. >_>

Oh yeah, and you will have to get them spayed or neutered. Of course, so many people don't do that that we have a huge pet overpopulation problem. Of course... "it's wrong to take away her right to be a mother!" or "they should have at least one litter before they're fixed.." or any other other cliche sayings are just inane and proof of a lack of education in any sort of animal husbandry (including OWNING DOGS AND CATS!)
Couldn't of said it better, people forget that animals have *no* moral sense when it comes to sex, and *will* breed at the first and best opportunity when and if its given. Case in point is our youngest Cat. According to the Cats protection league she already had a litter of kittens at a mere 9 months old! Thankfully she was spayed at the rescue center, but it goes to show when she’s really still very much a baby herself. When she’s really still very much a baby herself.

Cat's can have their first litter between 5-7 months of age. :< And their heats are not cyclical, so if anything interesting walks by, they go into heat.

To make things worse is that every two or three days (it is a slight cycle, though not by much) queens do become receptive, and will actively go out seeking males for sex*. Either way unless you actually want to breed your cat then getting them done is a necessity.
*Prompted a nice quip from my tutor while I was doing my IAT course that we "could have one hell of a party if we could get a male guinea pig to mate with a female cat" referring to the two lab species that constantly had sex on the brain.

Have you tried looking at the humane society for a cheap way to get your kitties spayed? Where I used to live, they had a voucher program and it was like.. $15 bucks. Might be worth looking into. And at least your male is fixed so you're not constantly churning out kittens like some people do. :)

And don't get me started on the people who get pets because it's part of the fad, like when everybody went out and bought dalmations when 101 Dalmations came out. I fear the same will happen with Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Out of ten people who might get them, maybe two or three will keep them and care for them properly. Ugh.

I couldn't believe it... He can't even hit the cost within 1k.... If he has to guess what he has spent on that dog (it is maybe 7 years old) to date, he just says 2 or 3k here, 3k there, Plus normal maint. vet and food....
Plus he is in the service and they have flown that dog from Korea to Florida to Alaska to Oregon.... Now the dog just flew to South carolina.... I can not immagine a dog that has seen that many frequent flyer miles.

I was told by petsmart I need to have a regular vet set up before I can actually pick up the cat for adoption. What's up with that?
I figured you would be the best source I know on this.
