Jensen stepped out onto the deck and closed the back door behind him, after ensuring that D.C. had managed to slip out the door.

He smiled as he listened to the sound of Jared’s laughter and the dogs’ accompanying barks somewhere nearby in the trees.

He glanced over to his right and the memory of Jeffrey Morgan’s last few moments flashed through his mind.

It was coming up on a year since everything that had transpired that day and sometimes it felt more like a dream than anything that had really happened. But then there were other times, like in the middle of the night when the memories of running from Colorado and meeting up with Steve and Chris and his violent anger towards Jared would surface in dreams, pulling him from his sleep sweating and shaking and it was like it had only happened the day before.

He understood why it was forbidden to time travel, that the risks were too great but honestly, for him, it was the jumbled memories of what did happen but yet didn’t. And then there was the jarring moment of waking up sprawled on the deck when his last moment before that had been watching Jeff die and feeling the strongest wave of vertigo wash over him.

At least he had Jared to share his thoughts with because without that he didn’t know if he would be able to stay sane.

“Get him, Get Jensen!”

He turned in time to watch Harley and Sadie come bounding out of the trees heading straight for him. He caught sight of Jared appearing at the tree line only seconds before the dogs surrounded him, laughing at him as his arms pin wheeled while he tried to keep his footing while the dogs jumped at him.

Gravity and the dogs conspired against him and he went down in a flurry of wagging tails and wet tongues.

“Jared! You’re an ass!”

Jared was happy as he saw the dogs slobber and tackle his lover. It had been so good for Jared to see Jensen alive and well once again because Jensen had proven to be the one person in his existence that had kept Jared alive. They experienced their harsh times but had their extraordinarily good times, as well.

The moments of heartache would be few and far between but were absolutely worth it when it came to Jensen. Hell if Jared had risked his duty as a guardian to save Jensen’s life there was nothing else greater than that.

Jared went up to Jensen and bent down and immediately the dogs backed away as if they somehow knew the plan that Jared had in mind. Jensen’s eyes adverted to the position Jared was in because Jared stood on one knee and held his hand in Jensen’s.

Jared knew there was two ways that this proposal could go. Either Jensen said yes and they arranged the ceremony or Jensen said no and they would wait.

It went something akin to:

Jared took a deep prolonged sigh, “Jensen I could come up with a fancy speech for you and pour my heart out until I’m blue in the face but that’s not going to convince you.” Right then Jared had laid a gentle, heartfelt kiss that overflowed with passion and grace and then some. When Jared pulled away Jensen looked as if he was in a daze.

“My momma used to say you were able to tell if love was real by the kiss of your lover.” Jared explained as he continued with the proposal. “So, tell me what you feel. If you don’t want to marry me I can wait, Jen. I just want you to know that what I feel is real.”

No one was able to replace that feeling Jared felt when Jensen smiled back at him warm and bright. His lover’s bottle green eyes tried desperately to hold back the tears but Jared knew then, with no help, what the answer was.

“Yes.” Jensen replied as he took Jared’s mouth into his with a gentle push and a soft caress. “Yes.”
