Masterlist 42. Mother’s way of getting things
They’re been avoiding each other since the game. Only meeting every morning to go to school (because they really didn’t want to raise questions), or at the weekly dinners their families shared. It was just weird to be together when Merlin had to deal with the stupid crush and Arthur with his sudden attraction for the girl. So the avoidance really had been a mutual agreement from both parts.
“I was thinking…” Merlin’s mother starts when they are driving back from the market with all the supplies needed for the Thanksgiving dinner. “We should invite Andrew, Arthur and Morgana for dinner. They don’t celebrate that kind of thing in England.”
“No, they don’t.” Merlin confirms with a shrug.
“That’s okay with you? Inviting them?”
“Why wouldn’t it be?” The girl asks with a frown. Susan watches her from the corner of her eye.
“It’s just you and Arthur seem to be a little awkward around each other lately. Andrew and I were trying to figure out what’s wrong this time. We know you guys didn’t fight again because you’re still speaking, but only saying the minimal.”
“I guess we just grew apart.” Merlin shrugs again, looking away. “It’s not like we have much in common anyway.”
“That was never a problem before.”
“Yeah, but now Arthur has his own friends.”
Susan smiles knowingly, glancing at her daughter.
“Oh honey, are you jealous of Arthur?”
“What?” Merlin splutters, turning bright red. “I… no! Don’t be ridiculous mom! I don’t care who he hangs with. He’s a prat.”
“Of course, dear.” Susan says with a barely contained smirk.
“I’m serious, mother! I really don’t care.” Merlin protests exasperated. Her mother can almost see the pout forming on her lips.
“So you wouldn’t mind going over and inviting them, would you?” Susan asks sweetly after she parks the car on the driveway.
“Why me? Why don’t you go?”
“Because I need to put groceries away.”
“Mother…” Merlin starts to protest.
“But if you have a reason to not go over…” Susan trails off, watching Merlin carefully as the girl slump down and sigh.
“Fine, I’ll go.” Merlin replies resigned.
“Thank you, honey.” She says sweetly before carrying the bags towards the house with a grin. Sometimes, her daughter was just too easy to maneuver.
