Wow! Almost didn't make it home on time :) What a roller coaster day, but things are back where they should be - I think. Things with Emily and JJ are still up in the air though, but see for yourselves:
Lead the Way - 044 - Goodbye, For Now
Emily had brought two bottles of red wine from Europe with her. After JJ reassured her that she had a bottle ready for Henry she packed away the soda she had brought as well.
Dinner had been wonderful, JJ had to admit, even if it was her own cooking. Dessert was almost over, she felt a little tipsy, but she still hadn’t approached the subject she was most anxious to talk about.
Emily too was waiting for the inevitable. The last time they went out, JJ had found out that she had had a string of one night stands but no relationships whatsoever. Surely she had caught on by now that such romantic “ever after” stories simply weren’t in the cards for gay women. At first Emily had tried to shield herself from the pain that a break up with JJ would certainly cause but her barriers collapsed whenever she looked into these blue eyes.
The profiler had come to terms with her situation and decided to take as much as JJ was ready to give - knowing full well that it would hurt that much more once the blonde realized she deserved better than this.
When JJ had asked her for dinner the day before, Emily had been more than surprised. This was the most elegant and respectful way she had been brushed off. JJ certainly was a wonderful person.
“I’ve been meaning to tell you…” she said now “…I’ll visit home for Christmas.”
Emily smiled at the thought of a happy family curled together under a Christmas tree, unwrapping presents. Another thing that wasn’t in the cards for her.
JJ paused for a second, unsure if she should dare to invite Emily along. She opted for a relatively neutral question and said:
“Do you have plans for the Holidays?”
“A function at my mother’s house - I have to attend.” Emily rolled her eyes before adding, “as usual.”
There was no more putting it off; she knew she had to say it.
“Will asked to join us.” There it was. She would spend Christmas with her family and her ex-boyfriend while Emily was not invited, sitting at the Ambassador’s table, bored out of her skull by all odds.
JJ braced herself for a tantrum, Lord knew she had seen guys fly off the handle over far less.
Emily swallowed hard. She wasn’t sure how she should react to this. Was JJ daring her to end this before she could? Was she asking what Emily thought of that? If she wanted permission to leave her and be with the detective, she should let her go.
For some reason Emily’s body decided right then and there to betray her. For the first time in her life she couldn’t get the words out she knew were expected of her, words she was willing to give. She grabbed her plate and took it into the kitchen. As she passed JJ she whispered:
“Good for you.”
JJ felt her heart break and immediately held Emily back. She got up and took the plate from her hand. She put it back on the table, never letting go of the wrist in her hand. With as much love as she could show, she looked into these auburn eyes and said,
“It’s Henry’s first Christmas, you see?”
She searched for any hint that Emily understood, but the brunette had already closed up.
“You don’t have to explain yourself to me,” Emily said expressionless.
“I’ll miss you,” JJ whispered.
