*geeking out*

Good Morning, Livejournal. Although you may not have noticed, I haven't actuially been around this past week, as I spent the entirety of it in Brisbane, Queensland. Why? Well, I was there, as the start of my new life as a Serious Researcher, to observe/partake in a huge fieldwork project being run jointly by the BoM (The Australian Bureau of ( Read more... )

I think you've gotten yourself into a worthwhile, planet-saving program. I don't understand a lot of what you said, but it sounds terribly impressive nonetheless. XD I sincerely hope that, despite how difficult it sounds like the next few years will be, you enjoy it.

(And hey, finding a few anti-global-warming solutions would be a rather cool bonus, too.)

Oh my, 50k thesis? *hides*

But wow! The job sounds fantastic! I mean, I am personally not wild about lab and research sciences, but it sounds very exciting. If I was doing field research, I would want a plane to do it in. *grin* Are you enjoying yourself? I imagine the workload could be pretty crazy.

Today, I learnt that it's possible to do a thesis-by-publications, which is shorter 'caus most of it is a few journal articles you've submitted over your program. Sounds far better to me!

And yeah, it's pretty cool. I hope I get to go up in the plane sometime, that would be so cool. And since the course only officially started today, it'll be a while yet before I fully grasp how much work it is. At the moment my work consists of trying to organise a desk and computer and such for myself, lol.

That does sound far better! How does it work? It sounds like pre-published articles you've written... Like actual published articles, or previous essays, or am I totally misunderstanding? *curious* How is it going?

I bet the plane would be awesome. I hope you get to go up too! Good luck with it!

Thanks. Um, the idea is that during the course of your research, you learn enough original things that you can puclish some scientific papera about your findings in major journals (like Reviews of Geophysics or Science or whatever), and then your thesis is based on those articles with surrounding text etc. Rather than writing the information up in the 50k thesis, it's primarily contained in these articles.
