Today is the start of the period of Advent. I try to read passages from the old Roman Breviary during this period. It is a prayer book for each day, a very old one, from the Middle Ages. It consists of rituals, prayers of course and passages from the Bible. There are several volumes. I use the Winter volume which starts at Advent. It reads Isaiah ( Read more... )

Hallo Berthe,

Ik heb Jesaja even nagelezen, maar in De Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling komt de dochter van Sion niet meer voor!
"Wat rest er nog van Sion" staat er slechts in.
Heb jij een idee waarom dat veranderd is?

Groetjes, Jeanette

Hallo Jeanette,
Thank you for your comment. I write back in English, because there is a modern translation in English as well that does not mention the daughter of Zion (the: Contemperary English Version (CEV)). It was very late yesterday evening that I wrote that post and discovered to my shock that the daughter was not in the CEV... I had to switch over to another translation.

I looked up the verse in the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew speaks of the "daughter of Zion", definitely. I could not find a discussion about the translation of this verse by the NBV, so I do not know why they did it. I can only guess, probably they found mentioning the daughter (which symbolizes Jerusalem) confusing, wanting only to stress that there is a 'rest' that is over. It is only a guess, I really don't know, but they are not the only one who leave the daugther out.
