Thoughts about communities & free speech

Feb 26, 2012 13:13

To those involved, it's obvious that this post is in reaction to the shit-storm at simply_hugh_jen, but my opinions apply to communities in general here. I'm not trying to piss anybody off or offend them, but I can see how someone might take offense to this post. Just a warning.

Motherfucking FREE SPEECH, bitches!! )

I agree. I don't think screening comments is necessary. If there's a personal, vicious attack against someone then by all means, the mod has the right to delete it, but screening every comment that comes through? Nuh-uh. Especially when the moderators aren't around to unscreen them in a timely manner.

If I respond to someone's comment with a valid point or an opinion, or simply just to say "Hell yeah!" I don't believe it should take 2-3 days or even longer, in some cases, to appear. By then it's obsolete and makes no sense.

Agreed... Like I said before, in communities with moderated entries (not comments), they literally have mods on schedule around the clock to make sure things run smoothly.

I wasn't there for the entire thing, but what it amounted to was that some person or people got offended or unhappy about something. Part of it had to do with people not wanting to talk about Huddy or House (the show, not the man) anymore, at least in posts that weren't specifically about the show. Some people were unhappy about the negativity in some posts, so basically it amounted in a ton of new rules, completely moderated comments, and a lot of people either afraid to comment or angry that they don't feel they can express their opinions.

And when I say "some people" it's because I legitimately have no idea who was involved. All the posts and comments involved were deleted, and the first I knew of it was a posts with a small explanation and a ton of new rules.

And yeah, IMO, screening all comments is definitely a little extreme. I've never been part of a community who did that even temporarily until now.

The shitstorm carried over for days and days, and while I agree that screening all the comments is counterproductive to conversational flow, it was sort of a knee jerk reaction, like, "Hey, the people want only sunshine and rainbows, we'll make sure that's what they get." I think eventually things will go back to a more balanced approach. Just bear in mind, things need to cool down some still.

I so so agree with you, btw. I always felt simply_hugh_jen was the safe place to bitch and moan about the bad aspects of House (the show), so that we weren't stirring up wank in the main House communities. I still think that's what it should be, and with the new group, I think everyone can participate in the comm in whatever way they want. I won't say everyone will be happy now, because there are some people who aren't going to be happy no matter what we do.

I'm glad to hear that you expect things to cool down, because I really like the community and don't want to see it go down the drain.

There's no way to make everyone totally happy, but that's just life. Thanks for the comment.

We elected to screen the comments because certain people were being CONTINUALLY offended by what was said. These people never contacted ANY mod to express their concerns. They just attacked one mod for some comments she made and then several more piled on and it became a shit storm. I HATE that I did what I did. These were people who were no longer watching House and didn't want to talk about it. The comment in question actually had NOTHING to do with House or the House/Cuddy shippers. It came out of nowhere and the main source of complaints was about Share It Saturday. When we announced that Share It Saturday had ended and all the SIS posts were deleted, there was some gloating and snarky comments made indicating that they were glad I'd done it ( ... )

FYI, I don't mean any of this as an attack on you at all. That's not my intention, and I know you weren't happy with what happened to the comm either, and you're stressed out because you feel responsible to take care of everything and make everyone happy ( ... )

Well... the mods were taking part in the negative comments that some didn't like, so it's possible they didn't feel they could complain to the mods. We had no idea anyone was unhappy though, until it all blew up.

It was my comment that set things off. I'm more sorry than you can imagine for it.

Also, I only know of one person who indicated happiness over the end of Share It Saturday, and she has since apologized for her comment.

I really just want everyone to get along. It's probably too late for that now.

I know a lot of this stuff is about me, so I thought I'd come here to just voice something too. I've been ignoring the stuff about Huddy and Cuddy and LE negativity for a good while now. I just didn't think after 2 years we had to keep going on about it, and I did suggest that we were comparing Cuddy fans to Reginia fans and did we want to go down that path already? We didn't have to be that negative. Yes, I am an adult, and yes I can by pass it, but if the whole community was thinking- eh I'd rather move on- then you know maybe the community should. So a post was created, and I assumed it would allow people to talk about it. Some people did and then it was deleted and it was all put on Hiatus ( ... )
