Since he seems to have abandoned LJ temporarily, I thought I'd just let you know that he is feeling a lot better. His mouth isn't so droopy, and his eye appears to not be watering quite so much. He is still affected by light, whether glare or sunlight, so has to wear sunglasses, and even then it is still hurting his eyes. But overall, he is more ( Read more... )

My best friend (she was 32) had Bells last year. She made almost a complete recovery but what she did do was exercise her face as much as she could, pushing her mouth into the shape of a smile all the time so that the muscles remember how to work. Lots of stretching and massage and heat packs helped as well.

I hope he gets better soon!

Thank you for the advice and for the good wishes. I'll pass on both. :)

He is a bed salesman and he says he won't smile at the customers, as he would normally, because it looks like he is sneering!

Bell's is most certainly not a respecter of age, so he can be sure of that; this just happened recently to my half-sister's father during a time of extreme stress, also; strange to hear of it twice in a summer in acquaintances.

I am glad he is improving, it must be frightening.

To wake up one day and find your face with a different configeration is very scary, but he was relieved it wasn't a stroke, which was what he feared.

It's definitely not an old person's disease. Our former Prime Minister Jean Chretien suffered it when he was very young and has had a rigor of the left side of his face ever since. His political opponents have tried to use to belittle him, but its never slowed him down.
