Stuff I've still to do

I managed to lose a day over the holiday break. Don't know how, but what I thought was Friday turned out to be Saturday, which was a bit puzzling to say the least. you need an independent financial advisor, and one who specialises in pensions so you get the right advice. Try my fave site for links!

That's the trouble! I did have an independent financial advisor some years ago when we got into financial trouble back then (and still didn't learn our lesson!) We got a new mortgage, a fresh endowment and £10,000 to pay off the debts, whilst he earned £12000 on the deal, presumably from the endowment. At a time when (although we didn't know it) buying endowments were not a good idea. I wasn't particularly impressed.. The endowment has done well, though, but I still think he shouldn't have earned more than us out of it.

but proper independent advisors should offer you the option to pay them a flat rate fee or for them to take a commission, so then you know that you're getting the best deal. If they're commission only then they can't be classed as independent any more even if they aren't tied to any provider.

I know that now, but I don't recall he gave us the option back then. Still, I've been on to your favourite website and through it have found a few IFAs in my area who I will contact soon. Need to sort out the paperwork at least!
