Dodging raindrops

Nov 10, 2018 19:00

The weather forecast hadn't looked conducive to walking, but after the excitement of last night's stormy weather, this morning was sunny, and the BBC was promising nothing more than "light showers." So off I went, although in a concession to last night's drenching, I decided to stick to paved surfaces. I even planned a route that would bring me ( Read more... )

It's been equally wet here on the other side of the Solent, to the point where the museum had little dishes placed everywhere to catch water leaking from the windows (and the ceiling in places!) and CeX had closed due to flooding. I dodged the worst of the showers at first, but then made the same mistake as you of thinking that it wasn't raining that hard and I wasn't that wet, and so could take the long route to Tesco's to swing by a few Pokéstops... only to get properly soaked through. Wet jeans are no fun.

There's plenty of standing water around as well as all the drains are blocked with fallen leaves. If this keeps up overnight (current forecast says "probably") then that could a couple of trips tomorrow interesting...

I expect most of our libraries had to bring out the buckets in force today. (Oh for properly funded public services with roofs that aren't full of holes!) It's still torrentialling now, by the sound of it, although they're still saying "light showers" for tomorrow. If I do decide to go out, I will be a lot more wary than today. Though I still won't resort to an umbrella. I have Opinions on umbrellas.

Yeah, we've had a lot of sun, but interpersed with moments of Big Rain. Not for long, but long enough if I'd been out in it!

I think we had about three inches of rain in twenty-four hours. Which is more rain than we've had in the last three months. I had forgotten about the wet properties of rain.

Yes, venturing out in proper waterproof trousers is like trying to walk while wearing armour... It has to be truly horrible cold, slanting, rain-all-day rain before I put them on.

After this weekend, I suspect I will have to give up walking in farmland until the spring. Everywhere's turned into a quagmire. Thank goodness for chalk ridges and downland, since at least they can be walked on all year round without risk of losing yourself in the mire.
