Swallows and Amazons

We're off to the Lake District tomorrow, so I've spent the last week wrestling with the usual pre-holiday question: what books will I take? (Truly, I have no idea why I get so stressed about this issue before every holiday, since a Kindle and a Wifi connection allow me to source any new book I like once I'm there, and I never do much novel-reading ( Read more... )

Thanks for that evocation! I never had that particular fandom, but I recognise all the impulses - except that of enjoying stories of false accusation, which even now I find far too stressful to enjoy. (This rules out a lot of literature, from Othello to much boarding-school fiction.)

I find them stressful, too, which I why I didn't use the word "enjoy" about them. Rather, I find them very compelling: impossible to put down since I'm desperate to get to the big revelation scene and the triumphant vindication. Really, I'm all about revelation scenes, which is why I adore Scarlet Pimpernel style set-ups, and have a strong weakness for lost heir plots, too.

I wasn't into Swallows and Amazons, but I do recognise the symptoms!! Sci-fi tended to be where I was at, with Blake's 7 reigning supreme for many years, lol! Ah yes, the front lawn stood in for the Liberator's flight deck more than once!!
