I quite like the sound of the Sir Robert Carey books. Are they very bloody though? (Thinking about the period and place they are set in).

I'm struggling to answer that, since different readers' tolerances vary so much. It's entirely possible that I sailed happily on past something that you would recoil from. But I don't THINK they're particularly bloody. Yes, there are murders and reiver violence. There's a hanging, drawing and quartering in one of the London books, and some sightings of people post-torture. But the violence isn't described in long and loving detail. The viewpoint characters live in a society in which this sort of violence is commonplace, so it tends to get mentioned in a matter of fact manner, then moved on past. There have been one or two scenes when I have begun to squirm uncomfortably, but the narrative backed off before things got too bad.

Thanks! My tolerances are definitely lower than average, but if there isn't excessive detail, I should be fine. I'll give the first book a go and see how I get on.
