Randomness

Still very tired. I thought I was mostly better, so walked into Newport yesterday, but it left me so near-paralysed by tiredness that I had to fight hard not to burst into tears in the M&S menswear department. But tea and a spot of people-watching from the Sainsbury's cafe - positioned above the shop's entrance so you can watch all the comings and ( Read more... )

Interesting question about Yore. I think there are probably three main components to the sense that it was dirty: muddy roads, well mixed with horse dung; lack of frequent washing, either of body or clothes; and lack of an underground sewage system ( ... )

Interesting point about changing standards of cleanliness.

Thinking about it more, though, I do wonder if it's just an aesthetic. 1950s and 60s depictions of Now and of The Future seem to me to be a lot cleaner and shinier than similar films and TV series go with now. The 1960s version of the Starship Enterprise has very little shade and shadow in it, but it all becomes physically darker in the later series.

Modern day children's history books are so totally jam-packed with poo, wee, filth and the yuck factor, that I wonder what films about Yore will look like in 20 years, when they're being made by the Horrible Histories generation.

I am suddenly reminded of the innocent days when sex scenes in books were represented by a line of asterisks. "His mouth met hers ... ***** Next morning ..."

*BUG SNAP*
Yesterday I almost burst into tears in Tesco, because I had done a slightly unwise-length walk and was unable to find the Jaffa Cakes.

Yore: I suspect this may have developed in parallel at least with the development of home technology? For in a home with no dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, washing machine or even internal plumbing, how could there possibly be anything but FILTH? And I wonder too, if it's partly because in an automotive world where people don't grow their own food much, people have forgotten the magical fertility properties and therefore desirability of horse and cow poo.

And I hope that you aren't overdoing things either, and that you feel better soon!

It was all quite unexpected. The actual cold-type symptoms are so much better now, that I thought I was pretty much back to normal. This extreme tiredness has really taken me by surprise. Today a slow walk to the end of our estate seemed like a climb up Mount Everest, in its general dauntingness. Then, when I got back, I cried because I dropped a tiny tomato.

People do sometimes seem to assume that because people in the past didn't have modern technology, that they were completely useless. If "I" wouldn't eat a dinner without a fork, then clearly people who lived before forks were invented tore at hunks of meat with their teeth and hands, had no table manners at all, and threw the leftovers on the floor.

I often find that with colds. You are feeling loads better and all seems well until you try to do stuff and then you do it for about 10 mins and then keel over dramatically.

Bleh. There should be a warning popup box or something.

If there were different punctuation marks for the plotting villain and for the rest of us, then the self-help book could be replaced by a book of pre-printed speeches, with the appropriate punctuation inserted.

Or something like that, anyway. I'm feeling a bit random today as well.

And I hope you aren't overdoing things too much, and that you feel better soon.

Oh, I like the idea of Evil Ellipsis and self-help books for villians!! Using the pause in the wrong place is more hilarious than threatening!!

Also love the idea of Highbrow veggies and animals, lol!!

Here's hoping the lurgi lets go of you soon *hugs*
