I *did* have that exact conversation on the phone with my mother, I mean the one where I told her Skordh was out the front fencing. There was that pause, and then her serious but puzzled response was indeed "is that as in duelling or as in conveyancing stolen goods?" After I'd explained that he was putting up a fence, she did say she hadn't thought he was *actually* doing either of those things, but assumed he was role-playing one of them ;-)

*laughs* It's at moments like that that I realise quite how bizarre much of my reports of our goings-on probably seem to my Mum. Sounds like you're the same. :-)

Surely you've heard of Rule 34?

*laughs* I'd managed to miss this one somehow, probably due to mixing in gen circles.

Bar-running. I think it has something to do with smuggling ballet equipment. No?

Mostly I respond here to say do not, I repeat, do NOT, ever go looking for fanfic involving beloved childhood icons. You will find it, your eyes will bleed, and your brain can never be fully cleansed.

I suppose it could mean smuggling anything that's been barred.

I certainly didn't go looking for Thomas the Tank Engine fanfic, and - although I was tempted to click on the link just to see what on earth was contained within - I couldn't bring myself to. It just happened to be near something that I was looking for, and it drew my eyes in horror and amazement. Though, I must say, writing badfic parodies of such things is becoming rather tempting... ;-)

But what is bar-running?

Just running a bar - i.e. serving food and drink to hordes of starving live role-players.
