The best laid plans

It's quite unsettling when the workmen you were expecting to turn up at 8.30 appear not much after 7.30. At least I was dressed, though had it not been so unfeasibly hot, I'd probably have been still in my dressing gown. "Oh, we'll need all this stuff moved before we can work," they said grimly. "I know," I said, polite, but through gritted teeth ( Read more... )

having totally failed to realise such a thing when I bought a week's load of dinners that require the involvement of an oven

I first read that as, "require the involvement of an oxen ... "

*laughs* That's a far more interesting reading than the true one. :-)

We're getting cold foggy mornings here so the children are moaning because I sent them off to school/nursery in shorts.

I went to the corner shop at 7.45 to hastily buy sugar for builder-tea, and it was boily hot even then. 27 degrees yesterday, I believe I heard. Strange to think it was snowing only a month or so ago.

We had exactly that problem in London, and got the kitchen ceiling replaced as a result - which probably added to the value of the house when we sold it! Hope it all goes OK. There seems to be a lot of building works going on at the moment, perhaps that bodes well for me managing to find someone to fix Phoebesmum's window.

How about a link to this fic, then? I doubt I'm the only person on your LJ who doesn't know where you post your fic!!

I post fanfic using this username, rather than my ladyofastolat one. I don't keep it particularly secret, but I just prefer to have a place to post and talk about fanfic that's only read by people who actively like that thing. For the last 9 months, I've been writing exclusively Stargate Atlantis stuff (all gen, mostly h/c, though quite a bit of humour), so I doubt anyone will be interested unless they're into that show. However, since my latest one is an AU set in 1721, it might be understandable by people who don't know the show. It was certainly enormous fun to write - and to draw for (see icon). :-)

Ugh. I always hate having workmen in the house. I feel like I'm in the way, no matter where I am. Not to mention I always feel a tinge of worry about safety, about being a lone woman in a house full of strange men.

Good luck with planning the story! And also, ack! What do you think caused you to lose your hearing like that? Definitely call a doctor right away!

Ours appear on the council list of "workmen who have proved themselves safe and reliable," so should be okay, but I still can't relax. They've gone out for a bit to buy tiles, so I'm back on my computer. While they're in, I've been using an old computer in the garage.

The ear thing's nothing to worry about. (Possible TMI coming up) It's just a build-up of wax. I've had it before. It can be fixed within minutes, but you need to prepare for a week or so, softening it with oil.

Workmen arrived early ... and you complain??? It is always considered a miracle in my household if workmen turn up at all.

Ours always seem to arrive early, prompting a mad flurry of rushing around getting decent and dressed. I suppose arriving early is better than arriving late, but it's all a bit stressful when it happens just after you've got up.

It is the feeling of doom that descends as the clock winds round to three and the workmen who were arriving 'in the afternoon' (ie anytime after 12), the workmen you have wasted a precious day of leave for, have still not arrived, and you KNOW they will be off soon to do the school run. I hate it.
