The Anita Blake Drinking Game! *eg*

Sep 21, 2008 12:02

I pulled this from the STL Fandom list this morning....  she's the GOH at Archon in two weeks time and I'm tempted to have a friend I'm hooking up with there ask the questions, "Why are you so damn obsessed with your 'bodyguard?'  Also, why do you feel the need to have one?  Are you that afraid of the world ( Read more... )

The reason she feels the need to have one is that people have tried to attack her before. Multiple times.

I'm going to ask this again, more directly this time:
If reading her writing annoys you, WHY are you poisoning your own life by keeping track of her? Why are you throwing away energy on even THINKING about her, when you know ahead of time that you're going to be crabby about all of it? Isn't there enough entropy in the universe already, without you adding to it?

Really not comprehending your thought process here,
Rissa

Glad that you discount rumor, but my basis is an eyewitness account at a convention about seven or eight years ago, as related to me by that eyewitness, a man above the age of twenty-five with the first name "Jody". He saw a petite woman being crowded against the hallway wall by a much taller (and wobbly as if drunk) man who was yanking open her jacket as if he thought she had fake Rolexes back there. The guy got dragged away by his obviously embarassed buddies, before Jody could get through the crowd to interrupt. The woman also disappeared into the crowd, in a different direction; he couldn't figure out which way she went, to see if she was okay, due to the bodies travelling in various directions ( ... )

Haha, I would not be afraid to ask such questions. But I'd pretend to be all nice while really being a bit... shall we say... nasty?

"Why do you have a bodyguard, if you don't mind me asking? I've never heard of an author having a bodyguard. I mean, does Stephen King have one? And he wrote Misery after he had a horrible incident with a crazed fan. Is that why you have one? Was your situation at all like his?" And instead of being antagonizing, I'd be all sweet and sympathetic.

I've been to King signings and he does had a police officer there at the store when he is signing.

I actually figured he would. But he has a lot more reason to have one than LKH. Because, you know, people actually know who he is on the street.

That would make sense, in his case. I don't follow his work, don't know much about him other than the whole wrecked his vehicle while not trying to hit a dog thing that happened some years back. (I remember seeing a photo of him at like the opening for The Green Mile movie some years back, of him still on crutches.)

So, I don't know if he posts about crazy fans or not, but no other author whose blogs I've run across post about how they're being stalked and what not. (Granted, you write paranormal stuff, you're going to get the weirdos come out of the woodwork, no matter what! :p) Mr. King knows he's got weird fans, but he seems to take it in stride and just take precautions w/o having to tell the world about it.

Let's just say..
IF stephen King WOULDA had a bodyguard.. he might not have gotten run over.
That being said.. Laurell is allowed to do what -she- thinks is necessary for her personal sanity. There are.. more.. entralled people with her works, who might or might not have Anita confused with her writer.. so you honestly can't blame Laurell much can you Niko ?
Dude. If LiLo and the Hollywood crowd can have'm why can't she ?

-ducks and runs off north towards Illinois, laughing all the way-

I think the trouble is...what LKH is doing in her blogs and other mentions of the subject of protection or security is the exact opposite of what you are suppost to do. If you are worried about your safety or the safety of others.

You do not release personal information publicly, she does this often in her blogs
You do not call attention to the attacks or the stalking in public, this just urges the stalker to greater and greater attacks, she goes on and on in her blogs on what security measures she needs to talk in order to 'feel safe' akin to waving a red flag to a bull.

Also, as far as anybody can tell there have been no attacks, the only 'known' insident was suppost to have happened at a con years ago...and even the people who ran that con can't find a record of that insident. So if this attacks ARE happening...shouldn't there be a record somewhere?

Point, ShadoWing, Point.

Might could be that LKH has talked herself into a corner as far as the "incident". If there's no record, then she looks like a drama queen, or a lunatic.
As long as she -claims- it is so, then anything she does is 'justified' and then it makes the con site host seem not too concerned with her 'safety' issues .. you kinda catch my drift here ?
I've only read three books.. of hers, so I don't consider myself an "official" fan. I think it's cool she lives like an hour south of me, but other than that.. I can leave her books lay just as fast as anyone else can.
and finally..
there should be an incident report of some sort, somewhere.
Hence the need for the extra pair of eyes and extra bulk to hide behind.

I think you nailed it on the head, I can believe...via her blogs...that the 'insident' was a fan/critic telling her that they didnt' like her books. She, for some reason, perceves that as an attack, attack = physical harm = need for a bodyguard. See her "Dear Negative Readers" rant for more on that perspective.

Logic to her...but not to others, she feels better and safer...which is good. But makes for crappy PR for her and her books when she blogs about it, since it makes her look nuttier than a fruitcake to others.
