Epilogue
Three months after the other world's Clark and Lex had left, Cassandra Luthor Kent was brought into their world with bright red hair and green eyes. Her delivery was a little rough, but that was mitigated for Lex by having Clark by his side this time, and neither could have loved her more. Athena was, of course, thrilled that her fathers were together and giving her siblings.
Three months after that, the four of them were enjoying a Saturday stroll through the park. Lex pushed the stroller with one hand and had the other wrapped around Clark's back. Athena leaned over the stroller and watched Cassie's sleepy face with a lopsided grin.
"She's so pretty, Dad," Athena informed them, not for the first time.
"We do have beautiful girls," Clark commented happily. He had one arm draped over Lex's shoulders and the baby's diaper bag in his other one.
"Good genes," Athena said with a laugh.
Lex sighed and turned his head to give Clark a kiss. "This is really the perfect day for this. I'm glad you suggested it. We can all soak up some sun."
"It's really good for the girls," Clark pointed out, even though Lex already knew that. "Hey, look, our bench is empty."
"Our bench, is it?" Lex looked over at it for a moment. Before he could comment further, Cassie made a grumpy noise, and he leaned over her, caressing her little face. "Not lunchtime yet, baby. What is it?" He pulled her into his arms gently, and she sighed as she laid on him. "That's it, huh?" Lex kissed her head, then looked back at the bench. "Oh, from that night we met up again. You were on that bench drinking cocoa, right?"
Clark nodded. "That's the one." He took over the stroller and held out a hand to Athena. "Do you remember it, sweetheart?" he asked her.
"Oh yeah, I remember." Athena touched Cassie's back gently and took Clark's hand. The baby wanted to be held by Lex a lot. "I had to practically drag you both back to the apartment."
Lex chuckled. "Thank goodness for our yenta, hm?"
"Definitely!" Clark leaned in and gave her black hair a kiss as they headed for the bench. "Is she okay?" he asked Lex softly.
"She's fine. She just wants to sleep on me. Misses her snuggly former residence, I imagine. But we were running out of room there, weren't we?" Lex directed the final bit to the baby. "Want to hold her?"
"As long as she doesn't mind." Clark placed the diaper bag in the stroller and held out his hands, smiling. Cassie was so little. Not as little as when she had been born, but still tiny against Clark's large hands.
Lex passed her over to her father and watched with a warm smile. Nothing was more beautiful to him right now than seeing Clark with the baby. It was good, right. He didn't mind sharing her with Clark because while Cassie seemed to prefer Lex for the moment, any time they spent together, Clark would bond with her a little more. She already liked to hear Clark's voice, but likely she remembered it from all the talking Clark had done to Lex's belly in the final months. Lex sat down on the bench and pulled the stroller a little closer to them.
Clark sat next to Lex, kissed Cassie's red hair and rubbed her small back gently. "Hey, pumpkin. You like sleeping on Daddy Lex, don't you?" he cooed, rubbing his lips against her fine hair. "Can't say I blame you."
Athena giggled and pulled her camera out of her pocket. She had gotten it for her birthday, and it was filled with pictures of her dad, pregnant, Clark doing goofy things, and recently them with the baby.
Lex grinned at her, then lifted his chin when he heard a little jingle playing through the park. "You want to get some ice cream, kitten?"
"Oh... Yeah. Can I?"
Lex dug his wallet out and gave her some money.
"You want some too, Clark?" Athena asked.
"Um... Not right now, baby, thanks." Clark smiled. He could not imagine being elsewhere right now, or being any happier.
"Dad?" Athena offered.
"No thanks." Lex shook his head and patted his stomach.
"You look fine," Athena insisted. Though after another headshake, she rolled her eyes and gave up on him, then went to go get her ice cream.
Lex turned to Clark and laid his head on Clark's shoulder, watching his partner and new daughter with a beatific expression on his face.
"You do look fine," Clark told Lex, turning his head and giving his lips a brief kiss and meet his eyes. "I love you. Thanks for giving me a family, Lex."
"Thank you for giving me one," Lex replied, looking up into Clark's eyes. "Athena, your parents, Cassie, you... I'd even thank you for the stretch marks, if they didn't disappear after a few months." Lex ran his hand up and down Clark's thigh. "You saved me in the most important way possible. Kept me from going under."
"I wish I had been there for when Athena was born, but I'm happy I was here for this little one." Clark kissed her fiery red hair again.
"Me too." Lex trailed his finger along Cassie's soft cheek and watched her until he spotted Athena returning as she licked her ice cream cone. She sat beside them, contented and exuding a warmth all her own. Lex didn't know what Cassie would bring to their lives, but if it was anything like the light that Athena brought, the entire world would be better for it. The three surrounding him made his smiles come easier and filled his life in a way that his continued research on whatever the metahumans needed or Bruce asked for never could.
