Second in a series of ficlets that take place during the pilot, “Caretaker.”  All dialogue and situations are directly from the episode, but the boys' thought processes are my own.

Harry and Tom are adorable! You wouldn't happened to know where I might find some of that fic, would you? My searches have come up dry.

And for Tom, that would definitely do it. Absolutely. Because if there had been pity, all bets would have been off, I think.

Yeah, Tom's not the kind of person to be okay with pity directed at him, especially not from some rookie ensign. Fortunately, the rookie ensign in question is Harry, who is awesome.

I'd forgotten about Tom's rocky beginnings! This works wonderfully with the other one, flipping the POV and showing us what fixes Tom's heart just as Harry's has been fixed on him. I love those split-second moments...

I had forgotten, too, till I watched Caretaker! He's all defensive and snappy, not really the easygoing Tom I remember.

I don't generally write fic this short, but a "split-second moment" is exactly what I was going for, so thank you.
