The beauty pic doesn't work. Just gives me a big green :p face. Even when I open the image by pasting the URL in a new tab. However, clicking the link shows me the thread, which does have a working copy of the pic. Seems there's some hotlinking protection here.
Anyway, one of the first posts mentions that it was from the (thankfully short-lived) Fox reality show The Swan. It involved plastic surgery as a significant part of each woman's "makeover," which took rather longer than 12 hours. Three months, actually, according to TV.com:
Each of the contestants will be assigned a team of specialists -- a coach, therapist, trainer, cosmetic surgeon, dentist and stylist -- that will work together to design the perfect individually-tailored program. The final reveal will be especially dramatic because the contestants will not be permitted to see themselves in a mirror during the three-month transformation process. SNL did a sketch about it, back in the day

Ah yes, the Poet Laureate. His job is basically to write poetry about Really Important Stuff as it happens (coronations, winning wars and the like). More here
We also now have a Children's Laureate, Jacqueline Wilson, whohas got shiny stars from me since I was a wee thing of nine, because she pretty much rocks.
