oh, dude, you have no idea. so last Dec a bunch of nuts got pissed that the university was planning on cutting down some trees to build the new athletics center and so they built tree houses and have been living there since. their whole argument was that they were old growth trees and therefore shouldn't be sacrificed. well, turns out that the trees aren't old growth, the university planted them a few decades back and they're going to plant 3 trees for every one they cut down. then the nuts argued that it wouldn't be safe to build that close to the fault line but the university shot back with a bunch of studies saying anything within a couple miles of the fault was equally unsafe and that encompasses the whole of downtown berkeley. anyways, the other day the university erected a fence around the tree people for safety, seeing as how 70,000 people are about to decent onto campus for the game. the tree people got pissed, saying that the fence constituted development (the university has an injunction against it to not develop the land ( ... )

I love all the talk about fault lines when pretty much all of California is damn near on or close to a fault line. Plus if a University wants to build on campus then they damn well will. Especially since Tedford wants to expand the program which will bring more money into the university in the long run and trust me money wins in the end. Brent Musbetger who's calling the game said on ESPN that the university is tired of tree huggers and do not want anything to happen during the football game. BTW my mom says hi and make your picks!!!

The really sad thing about the tree sitters is that they're completely being used by the rich neighborhood at the top of the hill above the stadium. They're the real money behind the anti-athletic center movement, because they don't want their precious views "spoiled" by a new building. Of course, the stadium has been there for years before their houses, so they really shouldn't be surprised by it.

The other side is that the city of Berkeley has this knee-jerk reaction against the university any time they propose new development. It doesn't really matter what it is, but the city always tries to block it because they don't want any new development going in pretty much anywhere. This time, they're mad because the university wants to build some new parking to go along with it all...
