I don't think when Don was talking about his stepfather to Rachel there was spite behind the words. He referred to them as "those two sorry people" because they would be stuck in the middle of nowhere doing absolutely nothing, and that kind of life just seemed depressing to Don. He did not want that, and here were two people who could never escape it. I think he felt sorry for them. Don was telling the truth to both women, I think. It's possible that Uncle Mac was kind to Don, or at least kinder than Archie was, but at the same time he still pitied him. That's the feeling I got from it.

Very good points all around. I do like your bullet on Jon Hamm's performance during the revelation of his past via the box. I was completely drawn into that whole scene, it was tense, and emotional. Hell I was crying and Don was crying. He was so nervous and completely shaken. NOT DON DRAPER AT ALL. especially that part where he couldn't even put a cigarette in his mouth.
