I don't know, I couldn't say one was better than the other re the book and the film, I think it's a tie - they're both excellent.
As for L.A. Confidential I think both the book and the film were excellent too - I could say that the book is superior because it gives Jack Vincennes a backstory and thus more depth; otherwise, there were other aspects and subplots of the book that had to go in order to accomodate a two-hour movie.
Also re: L.A. Confidential I couldn't help but notice how few of the men in that film wore hats...
